Matriarchal societies

We live in a society which is basically patriarchal, whether it is Asia, Europe, Africa or the Americas. Right from time immemorial this patriarchal set up had influenced our culture, economy and socio-political fabric.
But deep down in the South of India, in the state of Kerala there exists a community which has a strong matriarchal mould. The Nairs of Kerala belong to this unique community. Unlike others, theirs is a matrilineal set up. Traditionally a man’s property is not bequeathed to his son as in other societies, but to his nephew, because the head of the family figuratively is the oldest women in the household. Though she is the matriarch who has complete right over her property, it is managed on her behalf by her brother who is called a KARNAVAR. Every Nair therefore bears his or her mother’s family name and not their father’s. The house in which they live is called a THARAVAD which is usually made of teak and mahogany. Nairs are a martial clan and this probably is the reason for their matrilineal set up. Though Nair Regulation Act of 1926 brought about many changes in the community particularly with regard to property inheritance, the traditional matriarchal values persist, and Nair women are amongst the most empowered in India.
